Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival
The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival, held annually from late April to early May, is one of the largest cherry blossom festivals in the Tohoku region, attracting about 2 million visitors from all over Japan. Visitors can enjoy viewing around 2,600 cherry trees of approximately 50 varieties, including Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, Shidarezakura (Weeping Cherry), and Yaezakura (Double Layer Cherry). The cherry blossoms lining the outer moat of Hirosaki Castle are reflected in the water's mirrored surface, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The "hanaikada," where fallen petals carpet the surface of the moat, and the illuminated cherry blossoms at night, are also magical sights.
Aomori Spring Taste
The Togekuri crab is also known as the hanami crab (cherry blossom viewing crab) because it is in season in spring, making it an essential part of spring in Aomori. During spring, its roe is packed with a rich, flavorful crab miso, giving it an exquisite taste unlike any other crab.
Aomori Nebuta Festival
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is a Japanese fire festival held annually in Aomori City from August 2nd to 7th. Nebuta floats, crafted with incredible soul by skilled artisans, are a powerful sight to behold. As dancers called "Haneto" whirl around, their chants of "Rassera, rassera" fill the air. Experience the heat and energy of Aomori in summer, when the long, harsh winter finally gives way to spring, and the pent-up energy of the people explodes into this vibrant festival.
For those seeking the festival spirit year-round, Michinoku Matsuriya at Aomoriya by Hoshino Resorts offers a unique "365 Day Festival" experience.
Hirosaki Neputa Festival
Held annually from August 1st to 7th, the Hirosaki Neputa Festival is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. During this vibrant summer festival, around 80 nebuta floats of various sizes, adorned with kagami-e (front picture) and melancholic miokuri-e (back picture), parade through the Hirosaki area accompanied by the rhythmic chants of "Ya-Ya-Do."
Autumn Leaves of Oirase Keiryu
Oirase Keiryu, the only river flowing from Lake Towada, stretches for approximately 14 kilometers from Nenokuchi to Yakeyama. This scenic waterway is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, showcasing a series of 14 cascading waterfalls amidst the surrounding mountain scenery. Hakkoda Mountain Tree Ice
Snow Monster are a sight to behold as the snow and ice collide with Hakkoda's Abies mariesii trees, creating beautiful and splendid snowpacks. The best time to see them is usually between January and February, when they create a magical white world. On a clear day, you can see the entire city of Aomori framed by the snowpacks.
