Since the outset, the sport has developed into its current style under the influence of both Japanese and Chinese practitioners. Notably, Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid film series was named after the founder of Gōjū-ryū Karate, Chōjun Miyagi. Gōjū-ryū Karate is among the traditional Okinawan styles of karate and is a combination of hard and soft.

Okinawa is regarded as one of the world’s five Blue Zones; a region said to have a higher than a typical number of people who live much longer than the average population. Blue Zone longevity is often attributed to factors such as lifestyle and diet.
