Involuntary reservation changes and ticket refunds

If you wish to change your flight or request a ticket refund due to an involuntary schedule change or cancellation, you can do so on the JAL Website or through the JAL Contact Center.
The below rules and procedures apply to flights operated by the JAL Group.
Please inquire separately regarding rules and procedures for schedule changes, delays, and cancellations on flights operated by other carriers.

What constitutes an involuntary schedule change or cancellation?

  • Schedule changes and cancellations due to force majeure events such as typhoons, snow, earthquakes, and airport closures
  • Schedule changes and cancellations due to mechanical trouble or other reasons attributable to JAL

Reservation changes

Eligible tickets/EMD

JAL international tickets and EMDs (tickets and EMDs issued by JAL and beginning with 131) that include rescheduled or cancelled flights

Change to a new flight

  • You will be rebooked on the earliest JAL Group flight with available seats.
  • Flight change is subject to seat availability base on your reserved booking class and ticket fare.
  • If the change results in extra costs in fare, charges, taxes, or miles above the purchase price, you do not have to pay the difference.
  • Services associated with rescheduled or cancelled JAL international flights will be rearranged only if they are also available on the alternate flight.

Where to request a change

JAL Website

  • If you purchased your ticket through a travel agency or an airline other than JAL, you may need to reprocess your ticket after making a reservation change on the JAL website. Please follow the directions on the screen and contact the company you purchased the ticket from.

Ticket refunds

If you wish to cancel a trip due to the schedule change or cancellation, we will refund the unused segment of your ticket. 
If a flight cancellation or aircraft change results in a change to a lower class of service, the fare difference will be refunded. Please contact with the airline or travel agency you booked with after the trip is completed. Please note, however, that there may be no refund depending on the fare type.

Ticket purchased through JAL

Please go to the JAL Website to request a refund.

Cancellations and refunds may not be available on the JAL website for some reservations. If this is the case, you can use the refund form to request a refund.

Ticket purchased through a travel agency

Please contact the travel agency.

Refund application period

Tickets

Before start of travel: Within 1 year and 30 days of the ticket issue date

After start of travel: Within 1 year and 30 days of the travel start date

EMD

Within 1 year and 30 days of the EMD issue date

Refund amount/miles

Before start of travel: The full fare, charges, taxes, miles, etc. paid

After start of travel:The fare*1, charges, taxes, miles, etc. for unused sectors.

  1. Used sectors equivalent fare amount will be calculated in proportion of the distance using TPM (sector distance used for fare calculation) of the International Air Transport Association and deducted from the paid amount for refund.
  • If a flight cancellation or aircraft change results in a change to a lower class of service, the fare difference will be refunded. Please note, however, that there may be no refund depending on the fare type.
  • Ticket Service Fees are not refundable.

Cancellation/refund charge
