Guidance for Children Traveling on International Routes

  • All ages refer to the traveler's age on the date of commencement of travel.
  • Guidance on this page is for travelers departing from Japan on JAL Group operated flights.

Children Age 0 to 1 (Infants)

Fare

If not using a seat

10% of the Adult Fare (Infant Fare)

  • Some fares may have different discount rates or no discount.

If using a seat

75% of the Adult Fare (Child Fare)

  • Some fares may have different discount rates or no discount.
  • Seating is limited to seats adjacent to an accompanying adult only. (Seating across the aisle is not permitted.)

Notes

  • One adult may accompany up to two infants.
    However, travelers who are pregnant and due to give birth within 28 days may accompany only one infant age 0 to 1. In such cases, a seat must be purchased for the infant (the Child Fare will apply), and the infant must sit in a child seat *.
  • JAL requires a reservation in advance to use a child seat. Please contact the JAL reservation center (International Reservation and Information) for details.
  • If an adult accompanies two infants, the Child Fare will apply to one of the infants.
  • Newborns age 7 days or less may not fly. Infants must be 8 days or older to fly.
  • Because each flight can only accommodate a limited number of infants, infant reservations may not always be available.
  • Children age 0 to 1 must be accompanied onboard by a traveler age 16 or older.
  • If a child traveler will reach his or her 2nd birthday during a trip that includes a flight operated by another carrier, please contact the JAL reservation center (International Reservation and Information).
  • If you accompany a child under 2 years of age, you can not book flights opearted by Alaska Airlines including codeshare flights marketed by other carriers.

Inflight service

A variety of services are available for infant travelers, including baby beds (reservation required) and disposable diapers.

Restrictions on reservations through the JAL website

Reservations cannot be made through the JAL website in the following situations. Please contact the JAL reservation center (International Reservation and Information) to make a reservation.

  • One adult will accompany two infants
  • An infant will travel on a Child Fare and occupy a seat

75% of the Adult Fare (Child Fare)

Inflight service

A variety of services are available for child travelers, including child meals (reservation required).

Restrictions on reservations through the JAL website

Reservations cannot be made through the JAL website in the following situations. Please contact the JAL reservation center (International Reservation and Information) to make a reservation.

  • A child will travel unaccompanied by an adult
  • A single adult will accompany four or more children/infants

Unaccompanied children age 5 to 11

Reservations

Reservations for unaccompanied children must be made through the JAL reservation center (International Reservation and Information).
When making a reservation, please be prepared to provide contact information for a parent or guardian at the points of departure and arrival, as well as any connecting points.

The airport and inflight services for a codeshare flight will be provided by the operating carrier. Terms, conditions, check-in procedures and inflight services are subject to the operating carrier. Fare

Unaccompanied children are not eligible for the Child Fare.
The applicable Adult Fare (Standard, Saver, etc.) will apply.

Required documents

Travelers must sign and submit a mandatory consent form.

Other

  • A guardian of minor at the arrival(stopover) airport is asked to sign a declaration form and show identification that the child is met and handed to the right person.
  • Restrictions apply to itineraries with connecting flights. Please ask for details when making the reservation.
  • Children age less than 5 may not travel unaccompanied.

Unaccompanied children age 12 to 15

JAL provides a Family Service for unaccompanied children age 12 to 15 who travel on eligible fare when visiting family living outside Japan or returning from such a visit.

The airport and inflight services for a codeshare flight will be provided by the operating carrier. Check-in procedures and inflight services are subject to the operating carrier. Notes

Passengers of age 12 or 13 may not travel on a British Airways operating flight (including codeshare flights) without an accompanying adult of age 16 or older. Also, for passengers of age 14 or 15 travelling alone, a consent form filled out by a parent/guardian is necessary.
