Notes on checked baggage

  • Please switch off the electronic devices in your checked baggage. Valuables should not be included in your checked baggage.
  • JAL makes every effort to ensure the safe transport of our passengers‘ checked baggage while in JAL‘s custody. JAL accepts responsibility for damage to such baggage, unless the damage resulted from the inherent defect, quality or vice of the baggage, irrespective of JAL's knowledge thereof.
    Accordingly, passengers should take care that fragile items such as musical instruments, sports gear (golf clubs, surfboards, windsurfing gear, diving gear, bicycles, etc.), pottery, glass products and bottled alcohol are properly and securely packed for transport.

Free checked baggage allowance

  • As cargo space is limited on each type of aircraft, please understand that we may be unable to load all checked baggage on the flight.
  • The checking of baggage may be refused if the baggage is not properly contained in a suitcase or other crate to ensure it can withstand conveyance via baggage conveyor belts. Baggage comprising multiple pieces will not be counted as one piece of checked baggage if the pieces could come apart, scatter, or otherwise potentially damage other baggage.

Baggage in need of inquiry (Bulky baggage and musical instruments)

Passengers may be prohibited from checking the following baggage. Please contact us or your travel agency for details.

  • Bulky baggage with total outside dimensions (length + width + height) over 203cm (80in)
  • Large baggage that cannot be laid on its side and that has a height of more than 150cm (59in)*1
  • Large baggage or musical instruments (contrabasses, cellos, etc.) that have a weight of more than 32㎏ (70lbs)
  1. 79cm (31in) for any one side in the case of Boeing 737 aircraft

Excess baggage charges

If your baggage exceeds the free allowance, additional baggage charges will apply according to your route.

Notes on excess baggage

  • The maximum allowable number of checked baggage per person is the free checked baggage allowance for that passenger's travel class plus 7 bags.
  • Note that the maximum number of checked baggage that is allowed per person for First Class and Business Class are 10 bags. For Premium Economy Class and Economy Class are 9 bags.
  • Each piece of checked baggage must not exceed 45 kg.
  • Passengers will be responsible for paying all excess baggage charges when two or more types of excess baggage charges apply.
  • Passengers must pay the CAD base amount when paying in Canada and the US$ base amount, converted to the local currency, when paying outside of Canada or Japan.

Pet charge

The following rates will apply for each checked crate. The free baggage allowance policy does not apply for checked crates.

Surfboards and windsurfing equipment charge

Passengers checking a surfboard or windsurfing board will be charged the following rates for each bag checked. The free baggage allowance policy does not apply for these items.

Notes on surfboard

  • Up to two surfboards can be placed into one surfboard bag. One set of windsurfing gear comprises one board, one mast, one boom and one sail.
  • We may be unable to check items due to cargo hold space limitations. Please contact us or your travel agency for more information.
  • Other sports equipments will be handled as normal baggage and will be charged extra baggage fee under JAL regulations if weight or size is over free baggage allowance.
  • Passengers must pay the CAD base amount when paying in Canada and the US$ base amount, converted to the local currency, when paying outside of Canada or Japan.

Excess liability charge

There is a limit to a Carrier's liability for checked baggage. Passengers may pay the prescribed excess value charge for valuable items at the time of check-in to raise the limit of liability to the declared amount up to US$5,000.

Damaged, lost, and forgotten items

Baggage checked with us will be carefully handled until it arrives at your destination. However, baggage may be damaged or be delayed in arriving at your destination due to reasons that include inclement weather and airport requirements. We sincerely apologize for the considerable inconvenience suffered in such cases, and will make every effort to fix any such problems that may occur.
